Right after Port Severn, we had to ride the Big Chute. That's it, there on the left.  We had to dock to check this out before we got on.
 

Big Chute Lock, A Marine Railroad
The Big Chute is a Marine Railway that lifts you and the boat up and over the hill.  It is a way of keeping the water of Lake Huron from mixing with the water of the Ontario lakes that make up the canal.

Before we knew it, the Lockmaster called us to go in.  The marine rail car submerges itself, you drive in, and they lift the boat with slings like in a haul-out.

The crew hangs on and we all take a ride up the hill.  There are two sets of tracks on each side so the railcar remains level at all times.  I wished I had time to jump down and change Indiscipline's zincs and clean the through-hulls.  It is amazing engineering.
