The Log of Indiscipline III |
08/2005 Vacation Cruise |
![]() |
This cruise was 450 miles, all single handed. I worked
on planning over 6 months, and did lots of work on the boat to make sure
it was up to a long voyage, big winds, tough anchoring conditions, and a
load of teenage girls.
You can see the route on the map. Mission Bay Dana Point Catalina (Whites Landing, Two Harbors, Emerald Bay) Santa Cruz Island (Smugglers Cove, Coaches Prieto, Forneys) Santa Rosa Islands NW Beachers Bay Santa Cruz (Cueva Valdez, Frys, Smugglers) Catalina Two Harbors Mission Bay |

Day One was the long haul from Mission Bay to Dana
Point. 10 hours, sailed about 5. Arrived to huge winds and a
very crowded public anchorage.
Thank goodness for a heavy anchor with lots of chain! Joe and family arrived, anchored next to me, and we went for Pizza. The next morning was a 7 AM departure for Catalina! |

Winds came up big time about 1/2 way over and, under sail, I
just could not make Two Harbors.
This is fairly common, and my usual response is to try to make the east end of the island, anchor and go west in the morning. For several hours I was somewhat in doubt I'd even make the island! Later afternoon wind shift put me in right around Whites Landing. |

Utopia ended up in the same place and the next morning we motored up to Two Harbors. |

We got side by side on the string line. |

The kids were quick to take off in the kayaks. |

afternoon family life aboard Utopia (5 people on a C25). |

The next day we motorsailed about 3 miles to Emerald Bay |

This beautiful spot has great protection, clear water, and wonderful snorkeling. |

We dingied over to these rocks to explore the fish and kelp beds. |
