The Log of Indiscipline III

06/03 Vacation Cruise

The Baumgart family cruised from Dana Point to Two Harbors for the 2003 vacation in Indiscipline III.  We had decent South winds on the 40 mile crossing, putting us on a beam reach and making 4.5 knots under sail.  We motor sailed to keep the speed up to 6 knots and got us to the our berth on the string line by noon.

It was an easy, safe, and eventless 7 hour passage on 3 gallons of fuel.

The West End is a delightful place to stay.  We been here before, on Indiscipline I, and on Indiscipline II.
We stayed Monday through Friday (leaving early Saturday morning) to avoid the weekend rush.  Can you see Indiscipline all alone there on the String Line (last boat on the top right).  That's right, the smallest one!

We had every kind of weather while we were there - calm sunny days, thunderstorms, winds, rain, and grey foggy days.

The little dinghy worked great.  It was a little crowded for a family of 4 and two dogs (but so was Indiscipline III!).  I usually took the kayak.  The day of the thunderstorm, the dinghy flipped over while tied to Indiscipline III.  Karen and Amy rescued it.  The new Mercury 3.3 HP motor stayed on.  We worked several hours to clear it of water and it worked fine.
I made some friends in this great little cruiser - a Pacific Seacraft 31.
We spent a lot of time hiking the island
Cherry Cove - where I used to go to boy scout camp.
Lion's Head - guarding Cherry Cove.
At the end of Catalina Harbor - the last piece of land between us and Japan.
