Oceanside - San Diego Labor Day Race 2009 |

The 25 mile ride up to Oceanside Saturday was pleasant.
After motoring 2 hours, we were able to sail the rest of the way. The trip saw good winds, about 12 knots from the NW. Seas were a little bumpy with a NW and S swell of 2 - 3. Craig on watch minding the autopilot. |

When we arrived we were please to see that we'd be racing Alchemy, a Transpac boat. |

My family came down and we took a walk on the pier for dinner at Ruby's on the end. |

On Sunday morning, Joe, aka Sloopsmitten brought his Cat 25
Utopia by for a little morning conversation. Oceanside Yacht club had given me a 50 foot slip so there was no problem getting 2 boats in. |

The race started with very light SW winds, the course was SE. Craig at the helm in about 5 knots of air and 3 knots of boatspeed. |

We averaged 3.4 knots for the day. Here's Keith working
hard keeping the boat flat during the 1 to 2 hours when we had about 8 - 9 knots of wind. We were right with the fleet of slow boats at this time. A sharp eye will see 2 boats on the horizon in our class. Evening air went ultra light, boat speeds dropped into the 1 to 2 knot range with 12 miles to go. We dropped out at 7 PM just off Mission Bay and motored in. We did cover about 28 of the 38 miles and averaged 3.4 knots. |
