Border Run 2009 |

Thursday we motored 50 miles from Mission Bay to Dana Point. Friday we departed at 07:15 for Newport. Here's crew Craig off Laguna Beach on the ride up. |

These beach cats raced 70 miles. They had to stay inside and had a chase boat. |

We went for a clear air start at the committee boat, non favored end. |

The start was combined PHRF C and D and we were staying right with everyone. |

Sailflow showed the best air inside. Some boats went in. We sailed the rhumb line with the wind just forward of the beam, maintaining 6 knots over groud straight at the mark. |

Looking back saw a long line of Border Run and Newport - Ensenada boats. |

Getting rolled by a 50 footer. |

Later afternoon we still had winds on the beam, and still were sailing fast. No need for the spinnaker, yet. |

Right after sunset winds dropped and went aft. We went
up spin, then slowly saw speeds drop from 6 to 5 to 4 and lower. I served up a dinner of homemade chili while Craig drove and trimmed. Winds were forecast to build and go aft in the night. We were prepared with the number 2 spin up. With 11 miles to the mark we were down in the 1s and 2s. I began heading up to build a little speed, then come back down on course, over and over. Winds came up and soon we were back on course, trimming for speed, and very glad to have the #2 up. We doused 2 miles from the mark and finished under main and jib. Trying to find the line in a big crowd of boats. |
